Student Government Association
The Grady Student Government Association serves as the official medium through which students' ideas and opinions are presented for faculty and administrative actions. It is the governing body for the development, promotion and administration of student affairs. The organization also serves to improve student participation in school activities and promote school spirit and morale. The Association acts as the ultimate representative of the views of the student population by instituting and pursuing policies of interest to the student body.
The SGA holds elections in early September for both grade-level and school-wide officers. Both the school and each grade level elects a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and parliamentarian. The Fulton County Voter Registration Office supplies us with actual voting booths, and volunteers from the PSTA assist in the voting. Unlike previous years when voting took place in homeroom, students must take the initiative to head down to the theater lobby before or after school or during lunch to vote. In 2005, the first year of "real voting," 70% of the student body took part.
Meeting once a month as a full body, the 2005-2006 SGA spent the year hard at work. One of the first issues they tackled was trash. There is a problem after each lunch period of students leaving their trash behind on the ground and tables. The SGA spent the year curbing, but not yet eliminating, the problem and is continuing to do so. Their next two projects focused on community service. They organized volunteers to both work on Grady's first Habitat House and to work at the Empty Stocking Fund at City Hall East before the winter break. The SGA also worked with the school administration in response to student requests to reinstate homeroom everyday. The executive council took the idea to Dr. Murray in the fall and Grady went back to daily homeroom in the second semester.
One of the new programs they instituted in 2005-2006 was Teacher of the Month. Each month students selected the teacher whom they believe has gone above and beyond the call of duty in that particular month. Winners received a $15 gift certificate to Starbucks. The president of the executive council also records the "State of the School" Address in the early spring to update the student body on plans for current and future SGA activities. On Feb. 25, 2006 the SGA sponsored the first "Grady Day of Service." It's an opportunity for students to come to the school on Saturdays from 9-12 to keep their campus clean and earn double community service hours in the process. We hope to hold one session each month for the remainder of the school year. The SGA's biggest project of the year came on Saturday, May 13, 2006 when it hosted Grady's first annual "Film on the Field." Hundreds came out for the showing of "Friday Night Lights" on a 30ft screen set up on the football field in Grady Stadium. The event was a huge success and plans are already underway for next year's event.
